A handful of unexpected events occurred while we were updating our application environment on Amazon Web Services. What should have been 60 seconds of downtime required an environment rebuild that took longer.
We typically notify users ahead of time when we expect to experience an outage of more than a few minutes, but in this case we were not anticipating a problem.
Now that we know what went wrong, we have already adjusted our processes to avoid this kind of outage when performing similar maintenance in the future.
